Sketchbook Sundays – The Messy Middle of Making

“This week’s chaos in graphite and ink.”

✏️ What I’m Working On

Lately, I’ve been stuck in the “not-quite-there” phase of a digital portrait series — you know the one: too far in to quit, not far enough to feel confident. Still, I made some breakthroughs this week playing with color palettes I normally avoid (looking at you, muted yellows).

🖼️ Inspiration This Week

  • Film: The Handmaiden — absolutely lush lighting
  • Mood: Overcast mornings and vintage book covers
  • Other Artists: Been obsessed with @sablelines’ brushwork on Instagram

👀 Sneak Peek: WIP Portraits

“Still trying to capture softness without over-blending.”

I’m pushing myself to keep more texture in my work — trying not to smooth everything into oblivion. It’s uncomfortable, but that’s where the growth is, right?

🧰 Current Tools

  • Software: Procreate & Clip Studio Paint
  • Brushes: MaxPacks Gouache Set (a staple)
  • Hardware: iPad Pro 12.9″ + Apple Pencil (2nd Gen)

🧠 Creative Thoughts

Some days I sketch effortlessly. Other days, I redraw the same eyelid five times. But lately, I’ve been reminding myself: progress isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just showing up to the page — again.

🔜 Next Week’s Goals

  • Finish at least one portrait
  • Try painting with only 3 colors
  • Share something messy without overthinking it

Thanks for reading! If you’re also stuck in the middle of something, keep going — the art always catches up with the effort.
